Smoke-free Cancer Care

Protecting Patients in a Changing Nicotine Landscape

27 May 2026 | 15:30 – 17:00 CEST

Tobacco causes nearly 30% of cancer deaths in Europe, yet up to 40% of cancers are preventable, making smoking cessation a critical intervention across the cancer journey. As new nicotine products reshape the landscape and EU legislation is set for revision in 2026, this webinar explores how stronger tobacco control and cessation support can be integrated into cancer policy and care. This webinar is part of CPE’s 2026 Webinar Series focusing on key policy and patient issues in cancer care.

Why This Webinar Matters

The evolving nicotine landscape, e-cigarettes, heated tobacco, nicotine pouches, is creating new public health challenges and mixed messages around cessation. With the European Commission confirming that current EU tobacco legislation is no longer sufficient and a revision expected this year, this raises important questions about how current regulatory frameworks align with the EU’s ambition of achieving a “tobacco-free generation” by 2040. For cancer patients, diagnosis is a critical window for cessation support that can significantly improve treatment outcomes, survivorship, and quality of life.

What We Aim to Achieve

This webinar highlighted smoking cessation at the time of cancer diagnosis as a key intervention for better outcomes, and explored how cessation support can be effectively integrated into cancer care pathways across Europe. We addressed the implications of novel nicotine products for cancer patients and vulnerable populations, showcase good practices from CPE member organisations, and ensure the patient perspective is reflected through lived experiences of smoking cessation during the cancer journey. The discussion also contributed to a future CPE policy paper on smoking cessation and cancer care.
