Save the Date: Building Better Clinical Trials Together. A Stakeholder Dialogue on Pragmatic Clinical Trials in Europe

CPE, within the SALVOVAR project, is pleased to announce a stakeholder workshop, Building Better Clinical Trials Together: A Stakeholder Dialogue on Pragmatic Trials in Europe, to be held at the Cancer Patients Europe office in Brussels on Friday, 11 September 2026, from 10:30 to 12:30 (CEST). The workshop will bring together policymakers, regulators, clinical researchers, and patients to discuss the role and value of pragmatic clinical trials in addressing unmet clinical needs in oncology.

The academic oncology community is sounding the alarm on the overuse of anti-cancer drugs: optimal doses, durations, sequences, and combinations are often not identified at the time of marketing authorisation, leaving patients with unnecessary side effects and health systems with avoidable costs. In their White Paper Embedding Treatment Optimisation and Pragmatic Clinical Trials in EU Cancer Research Policy, launched at the European Parliament, CPE and EORTC argue that independent Treatment Optimisation studies conducted through Pragmatic Clinical Trials are needed to answer the questions that matter most in daily practice.

SALVOVAR, a European research initiative led by Hospices Civils de Lyon and funded under the EU Horizon Cancer Mission, puts this vision into practice. The project aims to improve the early identification of ovarian cancer patients at high risk of chemoresistance and to evaluate alternative treatment approaches through a large pragmatic randomised phase III trial.

The workshop will present the rationale and design of the SALVOVAR trial, followed by a panel discussion on how pragmatic trials can better reflect real clinical practice and reach patients faster. The discussion will aim to highlight the value of pragmatic clinical trials in generating real  world evidence that reflects real clinical practice, and to explore how research institutions, policymakers, regulators, and patient organisations can work together to support research across Europe.

Join us in Brussels to be part of this essential dialogue on how better-designed clinical trials can deliver better outcomes for patients across Europe.
