Francisco Rodriguez Lozano Honored with WHO Award for Tobacco Control: Insights from La Provincia

In a recent feature by La Provincia newspaper, Francisco Rodriguez Lozano, Chair of Cancer Patients Europe (CPE), shared his insights on the global fight against tobacco. The interview highlighted Lozano’s groundbreaking achievement: receiving the World No Tobacco Day 2024 award from the World Health Organization (WHO) last May. This prestigious recognition underscored his significant contributions to tobacco control.

Lozano’s dedication to this cause is deeply rooted in his long career. His commitment was further cemented when he pursued a Master degree in Tobacco control and dependence management from the University of Cantabria. This academic endeavour led him to take a prominent role in the National Committee for Smoking Prevention, and his leadership extended to Brussels as President of the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP). These roles not only allowed him to influence tobacco policies in Spain but also contributed to shaping European regulations against tobacco.

Addressing the growing popularity of new tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and vaping systems, Francisco Lozano expressed concerns about their perceived safety. “Despite claims of being less harmful, there is insufficient evidence to support that these products are safer than traditional tobacco products. The true long-term effects remain unknown, and there is evidence suggesting that these products still maintain nicotine addiction,” he explained.

In his interview, Lozano emphasized that the most effective strategy to prevent tobacco consumption is to increase its price. He argued that higher costs would deter young people and economically disadvantaged individuals, thereby reducing overall consumption.

Currently, Lozano is focused on supporting cancer patients across Europe through his work with Cancer Patients Europe and the Alejandro Da Silva Foundation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. His commitment to improving cancer care and patient support remains unwavering, reflecting his lifelong dedication to public health.
